New Zealand is a small country, but with thousands of kilometres of coastline. There are many surf breaks to explore - some in remote, quiet locations and others on popular, crowded beaches. Through your NZ surf adventures, you will notice that the wave quality and types will vary.

New Zealand is at fairly low latitude, meaning the country does not always have the warmest of climates. The South Island, in particular, receives south swells and passing southern ocean currents, making the water a little bit cooler. In the South, you will likely need a wetsuit to surf most of the year, unless you are really brave, and in winter a thick winter wetsuit with booties, hood and possibly gloves is recommended. The North Island sees more northern swells, so feels a bit warmer. You will need a wetsuit in winter, but in summer a spring suit or possibly boardshorts will do. Cool water wax is best suited for most locations in New Zealand.

New Zealand is green and clean with plenty of stunning scenery wherever you go, so traveling around the country is well worth the journey. It is also very accessible. There are plenty of accommodation options to choose from while you travel to different locations, as well as attractions to keep you entertained in between surfs. New Zealanders are mostly very friendly and helpful, so if you need information or advice, just ask a local. New Zealand is also generally a safe place to travel with very few incidents occurring, but it is still advisable to take precautions, as theft is an issue anywhere around the world. There are few dangerous creatures to be aware of, with most wildlife being more scared of us when passing.

Enjoy your surfing adventures!
