The Wairarapa is a great surf region to explore with plenty of top quality waves. This area is just far enough away from Wellington to keep the crowds down. Being on the southeast coast of the North Island, it is open to a wide angle for powerful south swells right around to anything with an easterly direction. The fun starts down around Lake Ferry and Cape Palliser, with a range of beach and point break style reef breaks. Then further north you will find Castlepoint Beach with some amazing waves, along with some hidden gems along the way. Be sure to take supplies, a full tank of gas and back up surf gear, because if you break something or run out of wax, there isn't much around.
