Auroa Point is a right hand point break on a rocky point, located south of Mahia. The waves are hollow and powerful, with steep drop ins. Auroa Point is fairly exposed, so can get big good swells and strong on shore winds can pickup. Leave this one to the experts.
Mahia South East Coast is a long stretch of coastline featuring many beach breaks and the odd point break. The coast is mostly sandy beaches with rocky points. Mahia South East Coast is fairly remote, with many breaks requiring a walk-in, but you will find beaches all to yourself. The waves are often punchy and powerful. Mahia South East Coast is very exposed, so usually has good swell but also gets strong onshore winds, so pick your day by viewing other reports for the surrounding area. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
Mahia Reef is a left-hand point break on a rocky point, located at the southern end of Mahia Beach. Mahia Reef needs a big swell to get in there, so it's pretty rare to get working well. When it's on, you will find fat, peeling waves on offer. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
Opoutama beach is a beach break on a sandy/shingle beach. Opoutama beach has several peaks to choose from scattered along the beach, which offer both right and left handers. The wave is fairly soft and fat, good fun, perfect for learners and mals. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
Tracks is a right hand point break on a stoney/boulder beach, located at the west end of Opoutama beach. Either paddle out from Opoutama Beach, or park at Point Annihilation and walk round. The wave is nice and wally, good fun, with long rides. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
Rolling Stones is a right hand point break on a stoney/rocky beach, named because of the sound of rolling stones when the waves wash in and out. The wave is solid and powerful, with a steep, fast drop in, and hollow barrels on offer. Needs a big swell to get it working. Leave this one to the experts.
Blacks Cliffs is a beach break on a sandy beach with some rocks out further. There are several peaks down the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is nice and wally but a little soft. Good for intermediate to expert surfers.
Blacks Reef is a right hand reef break or on an east swell you can get some left handers. The right are long and hollow with a good barrel section. This is a very good and popular break, meaning crowds, so know the rules and respect the locals.
Point Annihilation is a right hand point break along the rocky Waikokopu shore line. Point Annihilation has plenty of power, a hollow drop in and barrel section, through to a mellower shoulder. Point Annihilation can get crowded, so know the rules and respect the locals. Good for Advanced surfers.
