Waikuku Beach is a beach break on a sandy beach, located not far north of Christchurch. Its a long beach with many peaks down the beach to choose from offering both right and left handers. The waves can be variable depending on tide, wind and sand movement. The wave is punchy and fun, more hollow than the Christchurch local beaches. You can often find a peak to yourself. Watch out for swimmers, especially around the surf club. Good for beginners to experts. Waikuku Surf Club facilities and camping ground available.
Lighthouse Reef is a right hand reef break on a rocky reef just south of Jacks Point. The wave has a gnarly drop in, with hollow, barrel sections on offer. Best for advanced to expert surfers only.
Jacks Point is a right hand point break on a rocky, stoney point, at Scarborough, just south of Timaru. The wave gives a good length ride and a nice wally shape, with several sections to play. Best for advanced to expert surfers.
Patiti Point is a left hand point break off the end of the point. The wave has a steep, fast drop in, with some good power and a nice hollow sections. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. It can get quite popular when its on.
Smithfield is a right hand reef break, located off the rocks out front of the old Smithfield Freezing works. The wave is powerful, with a steep, gnarly drop in and a solid wall. Expert surfers only.
Taylors Mistake is a very popular beach in Christchurch and home to some of the best surf in the city. Taylors Mistake is a beach break on a sandy beach with both right and left-handers on offer. There can be an awesome right-hander off the rocks at the eastern end of the beach, and also on a good swell, there can be a fun left-hander at the western end of the beach. Taylors can produce a really powerful wave, with heaps of speed off the drop and barrels when offshore. Suitable for all surfers.
Port Robinson is a rocky bay with a right hand point break through the bay. Port Robinson is fairly inconsistant and requires a good size swell at the right angle to get it working. Can produce big long barrels or nice wally sections. Best left to advanced and expert surfers.
Fields is an isolated beach just round the point from Motunau Beach. It features a steep cliff/hill down to the sandy beach which can also help shelter the beach from some winds. The wave is usually soft and fat, but can get good when a bit bigger. The peaks are variable with both right and left-handers. You can get a good right-hander at the southern end when big enough. Good for surfers of all levels. No crowds here.
Motunau Beach is a beach break with variable peaks, just along from the river mouth. the beach is stony/rocky then leads onto sand. The beach offers both right and left handers providing good, fun waves. often softer waves, great for a mal. Good for all levels of surfer. For the adventurous, if you have access to a boat you can try Motunau island.
Gore Bay is a small holiday location on the coast from Cheviot, in North Canterbury. This is a beach break, onto a mostly sandy beach, with small stones higher on the beach. It's a long beach with several peaks offering punchy waves and possible barrels. Gore Bay picks up plenty of swell from a range of angles from north, east and south, providing a good chance of surf. Can get a few crowds on a good weekend day. Suitable for all levels of surfer.
