Coromandel

Tairua

Tairua is a beach break on a sandy beach, located on the east side of the Coromandel Peninsula, just north of Pauanui. There are several peaks to choose from, with both right and left-handers. The wave is powerful and hollow, good fun with some barrels on offer, but it can become a heavy shore break. There is also a good right-hander at the south end of the beach. Very popular beach, so watch out for swimmers, know the rules and respect the locals. Best for intermediate to expert surfers.

Pauanui

Pauanui is a beach break on a sandy beach, located on the east side of the Coromandel Peninsula just north of Whangamata. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is Punchy and hollow, good fun with some barrels on offer. The is also a good left hander at the north end of the beach at the river mouth, and a good right hander at the southern end of the beach. Popular beach, so watch out for swimmers, Know the rules and respect the locals. Good for beginners to expert surfers.

Onemana

Onemana is a beach break on a sandy beach, located on the east side of the Coromandel Peninsula just north of Whangamata. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is Punchy and fun. Popular beach, so watch out for swimmers, Know the rules and respect the locals. Good for beginners to expert surfers.

Whiritoa

Whiritoa is a beach break on a sandy beach, located on the south east part of the Coromandel Peninsula. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is powerful and hollow. You can also find some breaks round the southern point of Whiritoa beach, round to Mataora bay. Whiritoa is a Popular beach, so watch out for swimmers, Know the rules and respect the locals. Good for intermediate to expert surfers. Surf club in the middle of the beach.

Whitianga

Whitianga is a beautiful spot on the Coromandel. Whitianga has a beach break on Baffalo Beach and a right hand bar break at the mouth of the Whitianga Harbour. Whitianga is very sheltered from the swell and needs a at least 3m swell and the right angle to get in, hence its fairly inconsistant. Good for Beginners. River mouths often have strong rips and currents. Whitianga is very popular especially in the holidays, so watch out for swimmers.

Opoutere

Opoutere is a beach break on a white sand beach, with a right hand bar break at the mouth of the Wharekawa harbour, south end of the beach. Opoutere offers good fun waves with a nice shape, which can vary depending on conditions. You will need take a bit of a walk from the road along the sand beside the Wharekawa harbour to the harbour mouth, or if you are staying at the camping ground there is a beach access through the camp ground to the beach break. Good for all levels of surfer. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.
 

Whangamata Estuary

Whangamata Estuary is at the southern end of Whangamata Beach, a beautiful white sand beach. Whangamata Estuary has a right hand break off the bar at the mouth to the estuary, and also some beach break peaks along from the estuary. When its on the wave has a hollow drop in with a barrel section, but is changable depending on sand movement. Whangamata can get very crowded especially in the holiday season, so watch out for swimmers. Whangamata is best for experienced surfers. being a river mouth watch out for rips and currents.

Hot Water Beach

Hot Water Beach is a beautiful spot and one of the most picturesque beaches in New Zealand. It is very popular with the tourists, swimmers and holiday-makers. Hot Water Beach is a beach break on golden sand. It is fairly long with various peaks and is known to suck up for some hollow barrels. At the north end of the beach, there can be a left-hand point break, and at the south end, a right-hand break with an outer reef. The middle of the beach has natural hot springs in front of the rocks, where you will see people digging their own hot pools at low tide.

Whangamata Bar

Whangamata Bar is well regarded as one of the best waves in New Zealand. When the bar is on it creates a awesome, long left hander, starting with a steep drop in, a long barrel section, then the wave just seems to keep on going with a nice wall to smash. The bar is best on the lower tide.  Use the channel to help paddle out. Whangamata also has a good beach break with several peaks down the beach suitable for all levels of surfer. Whangamata can get very crowded especially in the holiday season, so watch out for swimmers, know the rules and respect the locals.
