Opoutere

Opoutere is a beach break on a white sand beach, with a right hand bar break at the mouth of the Wharekawa harbour, south end of the beach. Opoutere offers good fun waves with a nice shape, which can vary depending on conditions. You will need take a bit of a walk from the road along the sand beside the Wharekawa harbour to the harbour mouth, or if you are staying at the camping ground there is a beach access through the camp ground to the beach break. Good for all levels of surfer. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.

Directions 

From Thames head south on Ngati Maru State Highway 25, then just past Kopu turn left onto Kopu-Hikuai Road State Highway 25A and head east, to the east coast of the Coromandel. Turn right onto Tairua Road State Highway 25 heading south. Turn left on Opoutere Road, go through the Opoutere village alone side the Wharekawa harbour. When the road bends to the left away from the habour turn right into the little car park in the trees, or the camping ground is a little far along. From the car park there is a walk way with a bridge across the river, through thte trees to the beach, or you can walk along the sand to the harbour mouth.
