There are several peaks to choose from on the river mouth bar with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun, and can get hollow. Best for advanced to expert surfers only. River mouths often have strong current or rips.

Waikuku Beach is a beach break on a sandy beach, located not far north of Christchurch. Its a long beach with many peaks down the beach to choose from offering both right and left handers. The waves can be variable depending on tide, wind and sand movement. The wave is punchy and fun, more hollow than the Christchurch local beaches. You can often find a peak to yourself. Watch out for swimmers, especially around the surf club. Good for beginners to experts. Waikuku Surf Club facilities and camping ground available.
