Description:

Delaware Bay is a left hand bar break at the river mouth and onto a sandy beach. Delaware is fairly inconsistant as it needs just the right conditions to get it working. When its on the wave dredges up into a hollow left hand barrel. Best for intermediate to expert surfers. You need to walk across the mud flats and paddle across the river to get to the beach. River mouths often have strong currents or rips, so watch out.

Directions:
From Nelson head north on State Highway 6. Turn left onto Cable Bay Road, the road will turn to gravel, and follow this all the way to Cable Bay. Then continue past Cable Bay, up over the next hill. Park here and walk the last 1-2km across the mud flats, then its a paddle across the river to the Delaware Bay beach. You can also try turning off onto Maori Pa Road, down to Delaware bay, then it is a long walk west along the beach to the river mouth.
