Allans Beach is a solid sandy beach break. There are many peaks that form down the beach offering both left and right-handers. Suitable for intermediate to expert surfers, or beginners on a small day. Often a bit bigger than the city beaches.

From Dunedin, head south through town on Cumberland Street State Highway 1, then turn left at either St Andrew Street, Jetty Street Overbridge or Strathallan Street, then right onto Wharf Street. Follow this south onto Portsmouth Drive, then turn left onto Portobello Road. Continue on Portobello Road all the way down the edge of the harbour to Portobello town. You can follow the signs to Portobello. At Portobello, turn right onto Allans Beach Road, up over the hill to Allans Beach. Once over the hill, the road will turn to gravel for the rest of the journey. The road will continue along the east side of Hoopers Inlet. Follow the signs to Allans Beach. Park at the end of the road and take the short walk across one paddock to the beach.
