Matata is a beach break on a sandy beach, located along the stretch of coast north of Matata. There are several peaks along this stretch of beach to choose from, with both right and left handers. The wave is punchy and fun. Suitable for all levels of surfer.

From Whakatane center, go west on Domain Road, then continue straight through the round about onto Landing Road. Turn right onto State Highway 30 over the Whakatane River. Turn right onto Thornton Road and continue North west. At Matata turn right onto State Highway 2 heading north west. From here you can surf anywhere along this stretch of coast line, which you can see from the road, so find a spot with a good peak.
