Makorori Point is a right hand point break on a sandy beach, located in the next bay north of Wainui. The wave is punchy and fun. The wave gets better as the swell gets bigger. suitable for all surfers. Popular spot, so know the rules and respect the locals, and watch out for swimmers.

Sponge Bay

Sponge Bay is a beach break on a sandy/rocky beach, located between Gisborne City Centre and Wainui Beach. There are several peaks to choose from with both right and left handers. At the eastern end of the beach is a left hander and at the western end is a right hander. The wave is wally and fun, but requires a good size swell to get working. Good learners wave and suitable for all levels of surfer.

Tuamotu Island

Tuamotu Island is a reef break with a right and left point break on a rocky point, located out off Sponge Bay, between Sponge Bay and The Cliff. Requires a long paddle from Sponge Bay out to Tuamotu Island. The surf breaks off the point on the surf eastern tip of the island. The left hand point break then breaks along the south side of the island and the right hander breaks along the eastern side. The wave is powerful and hollow with plenty of barrels on the cards as it races along the reef, providing nice long rides on the left hander. Expert surfers only.

The Cliff

The Cliff is a left hand point break on a sandy/stoney beach, located near the yacht club at Gisborne. The wave is wally and fun, but requires a good size swell to get working. Know the rules and respect the locals. Best for Intermediate to expert surfers.

Waipaoa River

Waipaoa River Mouth is a beach break/river mouth break on a sandy/shingle river mouth beach, located at the mouth of the Waipaoa River on the south side of Gisborne. There are several peaks with both left and right handers, and a bit of a right hand point on the southern side of the river mouth. The wave is punchy and powerful, depending on river bar conditions its not often working well but this place can get good. When on, this place can get crowded, so know the rules and respect the locals. leave this one to the advanced and expert surfers.

Cook's Cove

Cook's Cove is out off the point at the southern end of Tolaga Bay, about a 25 minute walk from the Tolaga Bay wharf. Coves Cove produces a right hand point break on a rocky beach. The wave is powerful, with a hollow drop in and solid wall. There are also other breaks around Mitre Rocks and off Pourewa Island. Experts only.

Tolaga Bay

Tolaga Bay is a beach break on a sandy beach, with a river outlet and a right hand bar break on the south side of the river mouth. The beach break is a short fast wave, that often closes out. The bar break at the south end of the bay offers both right and left handers, although the right hander is much longer. Its a hollow or wally wave wave giving good rides. When its big you can jump off the old old wharf at the south end of the bay to get out the back. This is one of the few bays that can be sheltered in a southerly wind.

Midway Pipe

Midway Pipe is a few hundred meters west of the Midway Surf Life Saving Club, out front of Watson Park. Its a sandy, beach break with one main peak offering both right and left handers, or there are a couple of other smaller peaks further down the beach. The main peak has a hollow drop in and barrel section. The right hander is usually a longer wave. Midway Pipe can get really crowded, so know the rules and respect the locals. leave this one to the advanced and expert surfers.
