Ward Beach is a Beach break with both right and lefts on offer depending on the swell angle, located on the coast from Ward township. This beach has improved since the 2016 earthquakes. The beach has a rocky points at either end, and the rest of the beach is mostly sand/small stones. Ward Beach produces a wally,punchy, fun beach break wave. When its small watch you don't hit the beach as the surf breaks close to shore. Good for intermediate to
expert surfers.
Blue Duck is a sandy beach break, located just north of Mangamaunu at the Blue Duck Stream, north of Kaikoura. The wave is wally or fat. Good for all levels of surfer.
Clarence Point is a right-hand point break on a shingle/stoney beach, located just north of the Clarence River Mouth, north of Kaikoura. The wave is wally and long, depending on swell angle. There can be barrels here on occasion. Good for all levels of surfer. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.
Clarence is a river mouth break on a shingle/stoney beach, located at the mouth of the Clarence River, north of Kaikoura. There are a couple of peaks to choose from. The wave dredges up really hollow, with barrels on offer. Best for advanced to expert surfers. River mouths often have strong currents or rips.
Iron gate is a beach break on a sandy/Rocky beach, located just north of Blue Duck and Mangamaunu at the Iron gate Stream, north of Kaikoura. The wave is wally or fat. Good for all levels of surfer.
Ocean Fun Reefs is a beach break on a sandy/Rocky beach, located between Mangamaunu and Graveyards, north of Kaikoura. There are several peaks to choose from along the beach with both right and left handers. The wave is wally or fat. Good for all levels of surfer.
Okiwi Bay, also known as Sandy Bay, is north of Kaikoura featuring a beach break on a sandy beach. The wave is nice and easy, either soft and fat or it can get a good wall to it, with both right and left handers on offer. Best at a lower tide. Watch out for the boulders and seaweed in the shorey. Good learners wave, this is where the local surf school usually comes. The beach gets sheltered from the north east wind so can be good when everywhere else is wind blown.
Graveyards produces a powerful, yet fat, wave. It is a bit of a small right-hand point break, but if it's a little messy you can get some peaks with lefts in there too. Can have some hollow take offs. Best with more of a south swell angle. Watch for rock boil ups.
Meatworks is a boulder beach with a solid peak, offering rights and lefts. It is a powerful wave with a fast take off. Needs to be at least 1.5ft or you'll be on the rocks. Watch for rock boil-ups. Careful getting in and out as the surf rolls the boulders around. This spot is popular, so crowds are expected - know the rules and respect the locals. Best for experienced intermediate to expert surfers.
